We have a clear mission for policing London: More Trust, Less Crime and High Standards.
London is one of the world's greatest cities. Its diversity, energy and global connection make it an extraordinary place to live, work and visit. But they also bring unique demands for policing. Home to more than nine million people, London presents challenges of a scale and complexity unlike anywhere else in the UK. The Metropolitan Police Service exists to meet those challenges: protecting communities, tackling crime, safeguarding the vulnerable and supporting national security. Policing here has some of the greatest challenges but is also the greatest privilege.
Over the last four years, we have embarked on an ambitious reform programme to dramatically improve the service to Londoners. We have strengthened neighbourhood policing, generated major reductions in crime from neighbourhoods, delivered record lows in homicide and also the lowest injury violence of any of the country’s major conurbations. We have massively improved the quality of our investigations, nearly doubling monthly outcomes and taken decisive action to raise standards across the organisation. Importantly, Londoners are beginning to see and feel the difference. Today, 81 per cent of Londoners believe the Met is doing a good or fair job locally, while 54 per cent believe we are improving. Trust is increasing across all communities, with confidence among Black Londoners rising significantly over the past year and confidence among minoritised Londoners increasing by 10 percentage points over the last two years.
Our officers and staff are delivering results too. Last year, our homicide teams achieved a 95 per cent solve rate, one of the strongest performances anywhere in the world. Knife crime has fallen by 13 per cent this year. Neighbourhood crime is down by over 15 per cent, equating to more than 10,000 fewer victims, while mobile phone theft has reduced by more than 12 per cent. Across London, we are arresting over 1,000 more offenders every month than we were previously. These achievements are a testament to the dedication, professionalism and determination of our people.
We are proud of the progress we have made, but we are not complacent. Policing continues to face profound challenges. Crime is evolving, public expectations are changing and technology is reshaping both the threats we face and the tools we use to keep people safe. Our budget challenges and major headcount cuts mean a continual need to be more innovative, technology-led, a sharply operationally focussed. The next phase of our journey requires leaders who can build on the momentum we have created and help shape the future of policing in one of the world's most complex and demanding environments.
That is why we are seeking exceptional Deputy Assistant Commissioners to join our senior leadership team. This is a rare opportunity to help lead one of the world's most recognised policing institutions at a defining moment in its history. We are looking for an outstanding leader with strategic vision, operational credibility and the ability to lead through complexity and change.
As a Deputy Assistant Commissioner, you will help lead tens of thousands of committed officers and staff who police one of the most diverse and dynamic cities in the world. You will play a central role in delivering our mission, driving reform, tackling crime, strengthening public confidence and ensuring communities and frontline policing remain at the heart of everything we do.
Few leadership roles in policing offer the opportunity to have such a direct impact on the safety of millions of people. Fewer still offer the chance to help shape the future direction of policing itself. We are looking for leaders with the ambition, resilience and judgement to help take the Met to the next stage of its journey. As we approach the Met's bicentenary, we have an opportunity not simply to reflect on our history, but to shape the future of policing by consent for generations to come. The progress we have made demonstrates what is possible. The foundations are stronger, trust is rebuilding and crime is falling. The next chapter requires bold leadership, fresh thinking and an unwavering commitment to public service.
If you are motivated by the opportunity to make a lasting difference, to lead at an unparalleled scale and to help keep building the police service London deserves, I hope you will choose to join us in that mission.
