Foreword from Deputy Assistant Commissioner Helen Millichap KPM
"The Met launched a new action plan in December 2023 outlining how we will improve our response to Violence Against Women and Girls in ten commitments. As a key part of the Met’s transformation, we committed to radically improving how we protect the public from harm, especially the violence women and girls suffer, largely at the hands of predatory and abusive men.
Since we launched the action plan, Dame Elish Angiolini has published her recommendations for policing and we are working hard to respond to them. We are also preparing for the new legislation on public space harassment affecting women and girls. We also acknowledge that VAWG is a high harm, high volume threat to the public and its scale is underestimated. We support the work national policing is doing to illustrate the scale of the threat. We have an urgent need for collective action and a whole system response, which goes well beyond the policing sphere.
We promised an update on our plan after six months. On these pages you can find updates on progress so far, but we also know there is much more to do. One of our commitments was a determination to listen more to those most affected and we are pleased to be launching some new opportunities to participate and influence our plans."
