Summary

The brief circumstances of this case are that, on 4 June 2026, at Harrow Crown Court, former Police Constable Justin Tanija was convicted of one count of sexual assault, contrary to Section 3 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003. On the 3 July 2026 former PC Tanija was sentenced to:

• A 9-month sentence suspended for 18-months
• Is required to register with the Police in accordance with the Sexual Offences Act 2003 from 03/07/2026 for 10 years

The offence took place during a Personal Safety and Protection Training (PSPT) session at Hendon. During a multi-officer lift exercise, FPC Tanija inappropriately touched a female colleague.

FPC Tanija was formally charged with the offence on 6 December 2023, when he entered a plea of not guilty. However, following the trial, the former officer was convicted by a unanimous jury.

FPC Tanija was not in attendance for these proceedings. He was not represented at the hearing, although he had been given the opportunity to be.

Decision

The Chair, Commander Andy Brittain, found the allegations proven and determined that FPC Tanija had breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour at the level of Gross Misconduct.

FPC Justin Tanija would have been dismissed without notice had he still been serving and will be placed on the College of Policing Barred List.
