As a key part of the Met’s transformation, we have committed to radically improving how we protect the public from harm. The locating and arresting of wanted offenders involve several methods and technologies and they are located using a combination of surveillance, data analysis and other technology and methods. We relentlessly pursue perpetrators and work closely with partners to explore and maximise the use of wider powers such as public space protection orders and community orders to reduce offending.
The MPS approach to locate wanted offenders is multifaceted in respect of enquires completed and the different stakeholders involved. Phased checks are introduced for all wanted offenders, these phased checks work through MPS indices, partner data and public appeals. The MPS utilises various tactics to identify / locate wanted offenders i.e. Live Facial Recognition, ANPR, Media appeals particularly with those who are deemed the most harmful to communities or hard to reach wanted offenders. The MPS utilises various departments to seek wanted offenders which includes Basic Command Units, Specialist Crime and others. These departments also partake in operations throughout the calendar year with a focus on wanted offenders i.e. Op Sceptre, Op Pandilla, Seasonal planning and others.
