I recently exchanged emails with the Metropolitan Police Service press desk with regards a query about use of a third-party facial recognition search engine by MPS officers and/or staff. In the course of that correspondence, media communications manager (NAME REDACTED) drew my attention to a policy governing the use of such services, which he described as - an internal resource which is available to officers and staff and reflects the need to comply with the law including in relation to human rights, data protection and equalities considerations.

Any consideration for use would need to be undertaken in line with this Policy, and in some cases the nature of the online tool presents a high, if not insurmountable bar to lawful use. The process outlined in this Policy allows such a determination to be made in line with the applicable legal framework.
