Front desk police stations in operation and closures from 2008 to 2024

I note you seek access to the following information:

  1. I would like to know how many police station front desks are currently in operation in London.
  2. Can you give me a list of all of the police station front desks that are open please.
  3. Can you tell me how many London police stations front desks closed between 2008 and 2024 and give me a list of all the closures please.
  4. If the figure is different, can you tell me how many London police stations were closed entirely (not just the front desks).

I have today decided to disclose the located information to you in full. Please find below information pursuant to your request above.

Q1 - I would like to know how many police station front desks are currently in operation in London.

There are currently 36 Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) front counters in operation across London. Please note that we do not hold any details on the number of Front Counters operated by other services, such as the City of London Police, within London.

Q2 - Can you give me a list of all of the police station front desks that are open please.

Please see Tab ‘01.Open Front Counters’ in the below Excel Spreadsheet which lists the MPS front counters currently in operation across London.

Q3 - Can you tell me how many London police stations front desks closed between 2008 and 2024 and give me a list of all the closures please.

There were 154 MPS Front Counters recorded as open as of 31 December 2007. At the current time there are 36 Front counters. This equates to a net decrease of 118 Front counters.

It should be noted that there were other Front Counters that opened after 2008 that have since been closed. All full front counters that have been closed since 2008 are listed on the attached spreadsheet Tab ’02.Closed Front Counters’. There have been a total of 130 Front Counter locations that have been closed to the public since 01 January 2008.

Due to the two moves of Fulham and change from a freehold location to leasehold, we have only counted this Front counter location once, although it is listed 3 times on the spreadsheet to reflect each location of the front counter.

Q4 - If the figure is different, can you tell me how many London police stations were closed entirely (not just the front desks).

Please see Tab ’02.Closed Front Counters’ in the below excel spreadsheet; the ‘Current or Historic Property’ column (column J) indicates 92 sites where MPS Front Counters have been closed and the buildings are no longer part of the MPS estate having subsequently been disposed of.
