Freedom of information request reference no: 01.FOI.24.035176
I note you seek access to the following information:
1. Can you confirm what the current compulsory retirement age categories contained within the police 1987 legacy pension scheme are now which would be applied to any Police officer retiring on an ordinary pension having completed either 25 or 30 years pensionable service in 2024 and beyond?
2. Can you confirm that the previous Compulsory Retirement Age (CRA) of 55 yrs old for Constable & Sergeant ranks, 60 years old for Inspector/ Chief Inspector rank and finally for senior officers had a CRA of 65yrs old - that these ages are no longer relevant and do not apply to any officer retiring now?
3. Can you outline if and how these current compulsory retirement ages answered in Question 1. are relevant (detrimental) when a police officer of either Constable, Sergeant or Inspector rank is medically retired through the ill health retirement process before they have reached the CRA for their rank?
I have today decided to disclose the located information to you in full.
Please find below information pursuant to your request above.
Q1 - Can you confirm what the current compulsory retirement age categories contained within the police 1987 legacy pension scheme are now which would be applied to any Police officer retiring on an ordinary pension having completed either 25 or 30 years pensionable service in 2024 and beyond?
Over time the actual compulsory retirement ages (CRAs) changed and then were completely abolished. However the Police Pension Scheme 1987 (PPS 1987) legislation all relates to the original CRAs, these are as follows:
Met Police
Age 55 for all ranks below Commander
Age 57 for Commanders & Deputy Assistant Commissioners
Age 60 for Assistant Commissioners
Other Police Forces
Age 55 for Constables and Sergeants
Age 60 for Inspectors to Chief Superintendents
Age 65 for any ranks above
Q2 - Can you confirm that the previous Compulsory Retirement Age (CRA) of 55 yrs old for Constable & Sergeant ranks, 60 years old for Inspector/ Chief Inspector rank and finally for senior officers had a CRA of 65yrs old - that these ages are no longer relevant and do not apply to any officer retiring now?
The ages are as listed under the response to (1) above. In terms of pension legislation the ages are still very much relevant to officer retiring now with PPS 1987 membership
Q3 - Can you outline if and how these current compulsory retirement ages answered in Question 1. are relevant (detrimental) when a police officer of either Constable, Sergeant or Inspector rank is medically retired through the ill health retirement process before they have reached the CRA for their rank?
The enhancement to benefits under ill health retirement in the PPS 1987 is capped, so that it does not exceed the benefits an officer would have got had they served until their previous CRA – as per the ages listed above. Therefore again the previous CRAs are still very much relevant.
