Q5 - Can you confirm that Officers who were members of the 1987 or 2006 pension scheme can continue to retire on a final salary basis rather than average salary basis and are not time limited in this regard?
In respect to their 1987 or 2006 scheme service/pension this does indeed continued to be linked to their final salary. There is no time limit, this final salary link remains indefinitely up to the point they retire/leave, the only exception is if they opt out or leave the scheme for more than 5 years then the link is broken and the final salary at point of leaving/opting out is used to calculate their 1987/2006 scheme benefits.
In respect to the 2015 element of their pension this is based on their career average salary.
Q6 - What pension scheme is used to calculate ill health retirement for an officer retiring who joined the police in 1997?
Such an officer would’ve previously been a member of the 1987 scheme, so they would now have a 1987 ill health pension AND a 2015 ill health pension, each calculated separately on the respective ill health basis.
