Special constables are volunteer police officers who play a vital role in our mission to make London safer. By investing your free time, you can make a real difference to our city. You'll have the same powers as a regular police constable and will get a tremendous amount of pride from giving back to the community.
We understand that this is an unsettling and worrying time for everyone. The Met has been, and will continue to, following the advice issued by Government in relation to how we should all respond given the Coronavirus outbreak.
We ask for your patience and flexibility as we embed precautions designed to keep you, your future colleagues, and our assessors in a hygienic environment. We look forward to receiving your application and wish you all the very best in your process.
Same uniform, same powers
Those committed to taking on this exciting and rewarding role will need to complete a minimum of 200 hours annually, equating to 16 hours per month. You will be based on one of the 12 Basic Command Units (BCU) that are located across the 32 London boroughs. Specials wear the same uniform and have the same powers and responsibilities as regular police officers and enjoy a variety of roles and carry out duties such as:
responding to 999 calls
foot and vehicle patrols
priority anti-crime initiatives
working in schools to provide advice on safety and crime
road safety initiatives
helping ensure safety and security at public events
presenting evidence in court
offering crime prevention advice and promoting property marking initiatives
There’s nothing quite like it
As a special constable you have a fantastic and unique opportunity to contribute to the safety of communities across London.
We’re looking for people from all backgrounds to join us, people who can earn trust, respect and build positive relationships with all kinds of Londoners and whom share our values.
In return, you will receive the best training possible to prepare you for policing London. In addition you are eligible for a range of benefits including: free travel (within London), discount on council tax (within Greater London), as well as a range of other Met friendly benefits and discounts.
