The Stop and Search Charter
The Stop and Search Charter is a co-authored agreement between the Metropolitan Police and the people of London. The aim of the Charter is to achieve the fair, proportionate and precise use of Stop and Search.
We want to enable the public to hold the police to account through the Charter, as we work hard to rebuild trust and confidence.
We aim to provide transparency and raise the standards of our officers and leaders, using a data driven approach to work with London to reduce crime.
The Charter is made up of eight themes, which represent areas of focus to improve our policies, processes and practice in stop and search. These themes are:
- Focus on the quality of encounter
- Improved training
- Improved supervision
- Improved complaints handling
- Better use of technology
- Enhanced independent governance and scrutiny
- Community engagement on where, when, and why stop and search is being used
- Better public understanding of stop and search
The charter is part of our wider New Met for London plan to deliver more trust, less crime, and high standards.
