Sergeant Matt Ratana, 54, served with us in the Met for nearly 30 years. A much loved officer, he leaves behind a partner and an adult son from a previous relationship.
"As a colleague, he was big in stature and big-hearted, a friendly, capable police officer. A lovely man, respected by his colleagues, officers, staff and of course by members of the public, including, I may say, suspects arrested or dealt with in custody.
"My heartfelt condolences go to his partner, his family, colleagues and wide circle of friends. I am thinking of everyone who has been involved and affected by this terrible event.
"We are all deeply shocked and saddened. The Met is a family. Policing is a family, within London and across the United Kingdom, and we are all mourning a great loss."
- Commissioner Cressida Dick
