This year at the Metropolitan Police Service, we celebrate Black History Month by sharing with you some inspirational stories of our black officers and staff - both past and present – whose invaluable contributions have shaped the Met we have today.

Black History Month is an international month of recognition, focused on celebration and education in the historical and cultural achievements of Black communities worldwide.

Yet whilst celebrating the historic and present-day contributions of our colleagues here at the Met, it is only right that we also take this time to reflect on the challenges sometimes faced by our black officers and staff.

There is no doubt that 2020 has been a particularly difficult year for us all. We have seen Covid-19 affect our black and minority ethnic communities more than others, and we have been participating in public debates and encouraging internal conversations about race and racism following the appalling death of George Floyd in America, and the protests seen in London and around the globe.

We are proud of how much the Met has changed, the progress we continue to make but also understand that the Met still has some way to go and are ambitious to do more. We are confident that by continuing to work together, we can be truly representative of the diverse community that we serve in London – and be all the more richer for it.

It is with that in mind, that we would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the officers and staff whose stories we feature in our Black History Month celebrations. It is not always easy putting your head above the parapet, but their contribution to the Met is truly valued. We hope that by continuing to work together, and by challenging ourselves further, we can accelerate the pace of change and earn the trust and confidence of everyone we serve.
