Vehicle technician - Mobile Maintenance Unit

The vision of the Met is to make London safe for everyone. We are radically changing to deliver high-quality policing services in a more efficient and cost-effective way, in line with the Mayor of London’s Police and Crime Plan. Changing operational demands affect the size, make-up, and deployment of our fleet.

The Met are currently exploring options to support the acceleration of decarbonisation to achieve Net Zero Carbon status by 2030. With more than 750 alternative-fuel vehicles already on the fleet, we are currently outlining targets for the full rollout of zero-emission-capable vehicles as we transition away from a reliance on petrol and diesel. For the Met, this is both an operational necessity and a legal obligation.

The Met’s fleet of 5,000 vehicles, 1,000 pedal cycles and 25 marine vessels are all important physical assets that enable our officers and staff to carry out their jobs. The vehicles are a workplace for our officers and staff, carry sophisticated equipment for operational policing and providing a safe environment for the transport of the public and prisoners.

The vehicles are deployed on a wide range of duties and include such variety as general-purpose cars, protected public order carriers, motorcycles, armed response cars, pursuit cars, prisoner transport vans, transfer of plant and equipment. On many of these duties, the vehicles are subject to arduous use, responding to emergencies using police exemptions.

Fleet Services is part of Operational Support Services (OSS). They provide professional fleet solutions in support of all operational policing requirements across the Met in the most cost-effective way and is responsible for the entire lifecycle management of the fleet.

You will be required to work as part of a team to enhance the overall fleet operation and ensure that we meet operational demands and keep London safe by ensuring a safe, fit-for-purpose and available fleet in the most efficient and cost-effective way.

Responsibilities

• deliver an efficient roadside repair, maintenance, and recovery end-to-end service for a varied fleet of specialist vehicles within the Met
• work in partnership with the workshop to ensure roadside repair activity is aligned to detailed diagnostic repair activities to achieve the highest possible ‘first time’ fix rate
• support frontline operational policing with a safe, well maintained, and available fleet at the lowest possible cost, which meets the operational needs of the Met and externally set standards
• undertake safe working practices throughout the delivery of services including repairing roadside and compliance with regulatory and safety standards
• visually inspect and road test vehicles, interpreting feedback from the vehicle’s correct function
• diagnose electrical faults accurately, using high and low technology electrical test equipment to ensure they achieve vehicle manufacturer's standards
• accurate record obtained measurements and data on completed work, compiling technical reports where necessary
• maintain stock levels to ensure timely delivery of services and to reduce the number of recoveries or visits to the workshop
• adhere to service levels set to maintain effective performance; identify and inform improvements to support continual effective delivery
• accurately follow the end-to-end process for each manufacturer’s warranty process and follow repair instructions, specific methods, and techniques
• build and maintain effective relationships with workshop and users across the Met to ensure roadside provision is timely and meets the needs of the user
• keep abreast of the latest advancements in vehicle repair and maintenance to be able to maintain and repair existing and new vehicles across the fleet
• take responsibility for personal development and keep up to date with relevant standards and legislation
• continuously understand wider Met activity and decision making to assess potential impact on local delivery
• transfer knowledge and skills to apprentices and less technical staff
