The vision of the Met is to make London safe for everyone. We are radically changing to deliver high-quality policing services in a more efficient and cost-effective way, in line with the Mayor of London’s Police and Crime Plan. Changing operational demands affect the size, make-up and deployment of our fleet. 

The Met are currently exploring options to support the acceleration of decarbonisation to achieve Net Zero Carbon status by 2030. With more than 750 alternative-fuel vehicles already on the fleet, we are currently outlining targets for the full rollout of zero-emission-capable vehicles as we transition away from a reliance on petrol and diesel. For the Met, this is both an operational necessity and a legal obligation. 

The Met’s fleet of 5,000 vehicles, 1,000 pedal cycles and 25 marine vessels are all important physical assets that enable our officers and staff to carry out their jobs. The vehicles are a workplace for our officers and staff, carry sophisticated equipment for operational policing and providing a safe environment for the transport of the public and prisoners. 

The vehicles are deployed on a wide range of duties and include such variety as general-purpose cars, protected public order carriers, motorcycles, armed response cars, pursuit cars, prisoner transport vans, transfer of plant and equipment. On many of these duties, the vehicles are subject to arduous use, responding to emergencies using police exemptions. 

Fleet Services provides professional fleet solutions in support of all operational policing requirements across the Met in the most cost-effective way and is responsible for the entire lifecycle management of the Fleet. 

You will be required to work within a team to enhance the overall fleet operation and ensure that we meet operational demands and keep London safe by ensuring a safe, fit-for-purpose and available fleet in the most efficient and cost-effective way. 

Key responsibilities

Becoming proficient in the knowledge of a wide range of vehicles including cars, commercial vehicles, mobile plant, motorcycles, boats, and similar equipment. Ensuring the requests for parts and materials are dealt with promptly and accurately by interpreting manufacturer's technical information competently from parts electronic part catalogues (EPC’s), manuals, the internet or any other relevant source. Be available and willing to carry out manufacturers or suppliers training where applicable including travel to and from external training facilities within Met policies. 

• be aware of the specialised equipment used on some of our vehicles and being able to source that equipment
• ensure delivery notes are as per delivery where items match the order description, quantities are correct, are of merchantable quality and conform to the vehicle manufactures and Met specifications
• deal with inconsistencies and ensuring that all work carried out at the unit is in line with current procedures, all relevant paperwork is completed and signed and that all records are accurate and up-to-date
• assist with regular perpetual inventory stock audits to about 10% of the stock holding and include a monthly tyre count
• regularly monitoring stock trends with a view to increasing and decreasing stock levels and recommend new lines when appropriate depending on usage and vehicle make up
• raise purchase orders for parts and materials within delegated authority
• be aware of the warranty criteria for the various manufactures and identifying when items are within the warranty claim period. Being able to support the processing of warranty claims within set procedures identified by the Warranty Manager/Supervisor
• be mindful of the specialised material and hazardous parts that are used on some of our sites and understanding the way these parts and materials are stored, for example, batteries, paint, solvents, chemical cleaners, and general cleaners. Also knowing and understanding the control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH) regulations which relate to this material
• keep stock and non-stock parts stored in clean appropriate bin locations whilst managing obsolete stock and security within the parts department and workshop being able to show audit trails and accountability of all parts
• be willing to attend alternative sites to cover other parts departments when the need arises
• look at outstanding stock and non-stock. Enquire on these parts with the supplier and report back the findings. This is especially important with tyres
• be aware and fully understand the manual handling risks when handling heavy and awkward items 
• have a good knowledge of and keep abreast of Transport Service's policy and procedural requirements
• maintain all personal equipment, work area and accommodation in an appropriate condition
• while carrying out their duties the individual has a primary responsibility for both their own health and safety and the health and safety of others and should implement and comply with all health and safety training and/or requirements. At all times wear the correct personal protective equipment for the task being carried out. Be available and willing to carry out health and safety training in line with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) where applicable including travel to and from external training facilities within Met policies
