More challenges, more excitement, more opportunities. Be at the heart of a changing service.
The vision of the Metropolitan Police Service (Met) is to make London safe for everyone. We are radically changing to deliver high-quality policing services in a more efficient and cost-effective way, in line with the Mayor of London’s Police and Crime Plan. Changing operational demands affect the size, make-up and deployment of our fleet.
The Met’s fleet of 5000 vehicles, 1000 pedal cycles and 25 marine vessels are all important physical assets that enable our officers and staff to carry out their jobs. The vehicles are a workplace for our officers and staff, carry sophisticated equipment for operational policing and providing a safe environment for the transport of the public and prisoners.
The vehicles are deployed on a wide range of duties and include such variety as general-purpose cars, protected public order carriers, motorcycles, armed response cars, pursuit cars, prisoner transport vans, transfer of plant and equipment. On many of these duties, the vehicles are subject to arduous use, responding to emergencies using police exemptions.
MO11 Fleet Services provides professional fleet solutions in support of all operational policing requirements across the Met in the most cost-effective way and is responsible for the entire lifecycle management of the Fleet.
We are working through our environmental strategy to drive down emissions and support the Mayor’s London Environment Strategy, which has a vision to be a zero-carbon city by 2050.
The role holder will be required to work as part of a team to enhance the overall fleet operation and ensure that we meet operational demands and keep London safe by ensuring a safe, fit-for-purpose and available fleet in the most efficient and cost effective way.
The purpose of the MMU is to provide an efficient end-to-end mobile roadside repair, maintenance and recovery service for a varied fleet of specialist vehicles across the Met. Four fully converted electric vehicles will service our covert fleet across London and will have the capability to tow and recover vehicles and passengers. These vehicles are a one stop repair and recovery solution with the ability to be operated by a single technician and will carry tools and spare parts to enable them to diagnose and repair vehicles.
What does the average day look like? Your core duties will include:
The team will be based in Belvedere but will be delivering a London-wide service. It will consist of five technicians led by an MMU Supervisor. They will work closely with a range of stakeholders including Paragon staff, the Collection and Delivery Team and officers and staff across the organisation. Technicians will receive all training on equipment and vehicle familiarisation.
Some of the key benefits of this service are as follows:
The MMU vehicles meet all required standards for roadside breakdown or recovery from the 360-degree lighting to all reflective livery. They also include front and rear-view cameras for user safety and a recordable front facing camera. Each vehicle is fitted with a standard IDR unit and tracker as an added safety feature. The vehicles are designed with a custom low roof body which allow this vehicle to attend a high percentage of underground car parks.
They have the ability to recover motorcycles, 2wd (RWD or FWD) and 4x4 / all-wheel drive vehicles. An additional function is the total lift facility for recovery. The full lift capability can be used to recover most vehicles within the MPS fleet. It has the flexibility to front or rear lift all 2-wheel drive vehicles dependant on drive wheels. It can total lift vehicles with 4-wheel drive and motorbikes.
The electric vehicle charging capability enables independent on-board charging which can provide up to 10 miles in distance on an electric car with 0% battery, which allows the user to get to the nearest charging station (either Met building or public).
