Freedom of information request reference no: 01.FOI.23.030375
I note you seek access to the following information:
1. I understand there are ~ 18 Major Investigation teams across the Metropolitan Police and they are named MIT 1, MIT 2, MIT 3, and so forth. Can you please tell me the allocation of each numbered MIT team to corresponding areas in London. For example, I know that MIT 8 is Putnam. What are the others?
2. How many members would generally be in a Homicide Assessment Team and what would their ranking organisation be; eg 2 x Detective Sergeants, 3 x Detective Constables, 2x Police Constable for example.
I have today decided to disclose the located information to you in full.
Please find below information pursuant to your request above.
Q1 - I understand there are ~ 18 Major Investigation teams across the Metropolitan Police and they are named MIT 1, MIT 2, MIT 3, and so forth. Can you please tell me the allocation of each numbered MIT team to corresponding areas in London. For example, I know that MIT 8 is Putnam. What are the others?
There are 20 Major Investigation Teams (MITs) in the MPS which are geographically located North, East, South and West.
MIT 1-5 are based in the North, MIT 6-10 in the East, MIT 11-14 & 19 West and MIT 15-18 & 20 in the South.
A MIT is made up as follows:
• 1 x Detective Chief Inspector (they are known as the SIO – Senior Investigating Officer)
• 2 x Detective Inspector (Investigating Officer)
• 4 x Detective Sergeant (Case Officer)
• 18 x Detective Constable
• 1 x Police Constable
• There are also members of police staff attached to the team.
Q2 - How many members would generally be in a Homicide Assessment Team and what would their ranking organisation be; eg 2 x Detective Sergeants, 3 x Detective Constables, 2x Police Constable for example.
The MPS provide a 24 hour response in the form of a Homicide Assessment Team (HAT).
Each geographical area has a HAT car so at any one time there are 4 HAT cars servicing the MPS. Each HAT car is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If a death is deemed suspicious, the HAT car for the region is contacted. An immediate initial response would usually consist of three officers from MIT with at least one as a minimum rank of Detective Sergeant.
