Freedom of information request reference no: 01.FOI.23.028247
I note you seek access to the following information:
Could you please tell me how regularly serving officers and police staff have their details checked against the national police database (as NPCC guidance now says it should be) for potential criminality or concerns about their behaviour?
Are they
A. Checked against it when they apply/join the force in the first instance?
B. How often are they checked against it during their employment, assuming no adverse information/cause to do so has been raised?
C. If your force will check all of its officers and police staff against the database?
I have today decided to disclose the located information to you in full.
Please find below information pursuant to your request above.
QA - Checked against it when they apply/join the force in the first instance?
In line with APP Vetting 2021, the Police National Database (PND) is checked as standard in all vetting applications. This occurs prior to individuals being employed and also when clearance is due for renewal. Additionally, if individuals are required to undertake an enhanced level of vetting for their current role, or a new role that they apply for, they will be re-vetted. In certain instances, additional checks are conducted as part of a review into clearance.
QB - How often are they checked against it during their employment, assuming no adverse information/cause to do so has been raised?
• Recruitment Vetting and Counter Terrorism Check (RV/CTC) – the minimum clearance level required for all officers and staff is 10 years.
• Management Vetting and Security Check or Developed Vetting (MV/SC or MV/DV) – enhanced clearances for designated posts only is 7 years, with additional regular security reviews.
QC - If your force will check all of its officers and police staff against the database?
Renewal periods for vetting clearances are as follows:
Yes – all officers and staff are checked against the PNC database.
