Freedom of information request reference no: 01.FOI.23.027990
I note you seek access to the following information:
Please may you provide me with:
1. How many drink driving incidents (total annual figure) were there in the following years: 2012-2022. Please also provide the number of fatalities, if possible.
2. How many drink driving incidents were there on the following days:
31 December and 1 January of 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23. Please also provide the number of fatalities, if possible
The drink driving incidents I’m referring to is when a driver has been found to have a blood alcohol level above the legal limit.
I have today decided to disclose the located information to you in full.
Please find below information pursuant to your request above.
Please see the attached spreadsheet for information relevant to your request.
Please ensure that the data provided is read in conjunction with the notes page of the attached spreadsheet to ensure correct interpretation of the data provided.
Please note that unfortunately it has not been possible to locate the number of fatalities as requested at your questions 1 and 2. To locate this information it would be necessary to read through every record located (see spreadsheet). This work would far exceed the appropriate cost limit under the Act and would lead to your request being refused on cost grounds (section 12(1)). However, as you have asked for this information only ‘if possible’ I have instead made the decision to release the information that has been located to you.
I can only suggest that you redirect this part of your request to Transport for London (TfL), as it is possible that they will hold this information in a more readily retrievable format. Please find a link to the relevant page on their website below:
Freedom of Information - Transport for London (tfl.gov.uk)
It may also be of interest to you that collision data reports are published quarterly on the TfL website.
Transport for London - Publications and Reports-Road Safety
• Select ‘Road collision data’
• Select ‘Road fatalities’
• Select the document link which will take you to road fatalities since 2019.
TfL hold this data on behalf of the Department for Transport. It is the formalised, official data compliant with STATS19 recording standards, so it is more accurate than MPS provisional data.
