Research has been conducted between within the Road Crime Team (Raptors). Below is an oversight of what the Raptor Team are trained in. Any further specific details of training provided would engage exemptions covered by the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)
The Raptor Team is a pan London TPAC unit (Tactical Pursuit and Containment) operating under the MO8. The unit consists of officers trained to drive at high speed and engage in pursuits of vehicles and motorbikes whereby they can use tactical contact to bring the pursuit to a safe end.
The unit has a number of vehicles at its disposal both marked and unmarked including marked motorcycles (SOLO). All officers are either trained to advanced driving level or working their way to that level but in order to undertake TPAC training you must be advanced first.
A number of officers are also TAC AD trained which enables them to make tactical decisions during a pursuit and effectively supervise a TPAC incident. The TPAC course is a 5 day pass or fail course.
With regards to motorbikes or mopeds the most common tactic when safe to do so is tactical contact to bring the pursuit to a safe conclusion.
Obviously this is often the last choice and every pursuit is risk assessment constantly and every officer is responsible for making dynamic risk assessments throughout and using the NDMM (National Decision Making Model).
Raptor teams work across the whole of London alongside many other specialist units including Flying Squad, National Crime Agency, Specialist Crime, Op Viper, Violent Crime Task Force and Op Scorpion. This is due mainly to the TPAC capability the unit can offer.
Based on intelligence we will deploy to areas and look to remove violent criminality and high harm offenders from the streets that are using vehicles to commit crime. We will also look to target Violence against Women and Girls offenders when the opportunity presents itself.
