Money spent on civil lawsuits from 2017/18 to 2021/22

I note you seek access to the following information:

1. Please provide the amount of money in GBP spent on settling civil lawsuits against the metropolitan police for the previous decade, broken down year by year if possible.

2. Please also provide the number of civil lawsuits that have been successful or settled for monetary compensation against the MPS over the last 10 years, broken down year by year if possible.

The Directorate of Legal Services (DLS) registers cases on a case management system. Civil claims from members of the public are registered under the following case categories: Malfeasance, Public Liability and Road Traffic cases (threatened and issued civil actions).

The tables below are extracts from reports which cover the financial years 2016/17 – 2021/2022. They set out the number of cases Settled and the Settlement Total for Malfeasance, Public Liability and Road Traffic cases.

Please note: A Comparison should not be made between the number of cases registered each year and the settlement figures as civil claims can take several years to reach a conclusion.
