Freedom of information request reference no: 01.FOI.22.027146
I note you seek access to the following information:
I’m just getting in touch with a Freedom of Information request I am putting to all police forces in the UK about speed cameras which monitor 20mph zones and roads.
1. How many fines have been issued as a result of the 20mph cameras in your force’s area (a) in 2022 so far (b) in 2021 and (c) in 2019?
2. If the cost limit has not yet been reached, what is the total figure in fines issued for each of the three years?
3. If the cost limit has not yet been reached, how many motorists have been fined/prosecuted for driving at 24mph for each of the three years?
4. If the cost limit has not yet been reached, how many new 20mph speed cameras have been installed in your force’s area (a) in 2022 so far (b) in 2021 and (c) in 2019?
5. If the cost limit has not yet been reached, how much in fines has the highest grossing 20mph camera raised so far in 2022 and how many fines were issued based on its footage.
I have today decided to disclose the located information to you in full.
Please find below information pursuant to your request above.
Where information is not held, we have confirmed this today.
The MPS is today able to disclose information regarding Notice of Impending Prosecutions (NIP’s) issued held for Questions One (1), Two (2), Three (3) and Five (5).
In respect of Question Four (4) - If the cost limit has not yet been reached, how many new 20mph speed cameras have been installed in your force’s area (a) in 2022 so far (b) in 2021 and (c) in 2019? - the MPS do not hold the information requested. Speed camera assets are owned by Transport for London (TfL) who will hold details about their installations. The MPS are not involved in installing new cameras.
Should you wish to make your request directly to TfL, I have provided their FOIA web
page link along with their FOIA email address for submission of requests:
Freedom of Information - Transport for London (tfl.gov.uk)
[email protected]
In respect of Question One (1), Two (2, Three (3) and Five (5) the MPS does not hold figures for the amount of money generated from fines as a number of those cases would have been referred through the judicial system (courts). The MPS will therefore be unaware of court results/outcomes which would enable us to record the exact monetary value.
Further, all monies collected from fines are paid to His Majesty’s Treasury Department.
I am able to refer you to a link to the Treasury Department Publication Scheme web page and their direct email address to which you can submit a FOIA request to them;
Government - Publication Scheme
Goverment - FOI Request
[email protected]
While we do not hold the amount of money generated from fines, the MPS has been able to provide data on Notices of Impending Prosecutions (NIPs) issued from the highest grossing 20mph camera so far in 2022 which we hope is of interest to you.
Question One (1), Two (2) and Three (3)
Q1 - How many fines have been issued as a result of the 20mph cameras in your force’s area (a) in 2022 so far (b) in 2021 and (c) in 2019?
Q2 - If the cost limit has not yet been reached, what is the total figure in fines issued for each of the three years?
Q3 - If the cost limit has not yet been reached, how many motorists have been fined/prosecuted for driving at 24mph for each of the three years?
