Freedom of information request reference no: 01.FOI.22.026322
I note you seek access to the following information:
I'd like to make a FOI request for the number of serving Metropolitan Police Officers that are currently under investigation for alleged domestic abuse.
I have today decided to disclose the located information to you in full.
Please find below information pursuant to your request above.
Currently, there are 142 serving Met Police Officers under investigation for alleged domestic abuse.
The Met employs more than 40,000 officers and staff and expects its employees to uphold the law and behave with integrity at all times.
Domestic abuse is a terrible and insidious crime and we do not underestimate the devastating impact any offence will have on those involved and how these allegations corrode the public’s trust in our people.
Following our announcement of an independent review of Met standards and culture, an urgent examination into all current investigations of domestic abuse allegations against Metropolitan Police Service officers and staff took place.
Officers from our Directorate of Professional Standards reviewed each of these cases, including the individual’s vetting and conduct history, to make sure victims are being properly supported and the investigations are absolutely thorough.
The examination also dip sampled cases from the last ten years of domestic abuse allegations where those accused remain in the Met. This was to check that appropriate management measures (including vetting reviews) had been taken.
In January we created a new dedicated team to focus on the investigation of allegations of domestic abuse and are committed to taking firm action against perpetrators.
Allegations of domestic abuse against our officers and staff are investigated by the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards with referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct and liaison with the Crown Prosecution Service as appropriate.
