In January 2021 the MPS introduced new recruit pathways, the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) and Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP) —as part of a National Police Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF) set by the College of Policing. These work-based learning programmes will enable student police officers to gain a degree level qualification (awarded through our four London university partners) in formal recognition of policing as a profession
In terms of initial recruit learning, please see below for a breakdown of the assessment points across each programme. Each assignment has a pass mark of 40% unless stated otherwise (such as with the MCQs/Assessment Point 1 for the Initial Police Learning & Development Programme Plus (IPLDP+).
In addition to the below there are also Operational assessments: Independent Patrol Status (IPS) and Full Operational Competence (FOC) as well as the Professionalising Investigation Programme (PIP1) that all Student Police Officers (SPO) have to complete.
SPOs compile an Operational Competence Portfolio (OCP) throughout their programme to evidence their competence against each of the criteria for IPS, PIP1, FOC and PIP2. As they progress through the programme, they will gather evidence of their skills and knowledge to include in their OCP.

Initial Police Learning & Development Programme Plus (IPLDP+)
The Initial Police Learning and Development Programme (IPLDP) is the Met’s established learning programme, delivered internally by Learning and Development. It will closely align with the first two years of the PCDA. IPLDP+ will not, however, lead to an accredited qualification. In reflection of this, it is one year shorter than the PCDA and will not involve the same depth of formal academic assessment required to be evidenced as part of a degree-level apprenticeship. Student police officers will, however, cover the same learning and operational competence and will be rigorously assessed against the same criteria and level of standards. Whilst student are still undertaking this learning programme, the MPS are no longer accepting new applications for IPLDP+.
The assessment and formal examination details are shown below:
