Freedom of information request reference no: 01.FOI.22.027291
I note you seek access to the following information:
1. Police forces have a "tolerance" level related to when their speed cameras activate if a driver is travelling above the legal limit. For instance, a police force's "tolerance" may be 10% plus 2mph. In that case, on a 30mph road, a camera would not normally activate unless a car drove past at 35mph or higher.
Please can you disclose the current "tolerance" level used by your force's speed cameras?
2. If your force's "tolerance" level for speed cameras has ever changed since 1 November 2017, please can you provide a list of the dates for when each change to the level was made, and what it changed to and from?
3. For every month since November 2017, please can you disclose the number of warnings of prosecution sent to motorists for speeding?
I have today decided to disclose the located information to you in full.
Please find below information pursuant to your request above.
Q1 - Police forces have a "tolerance" level related to when their speed cameras activate if a driver is travelling above the legal limit. For instance, a police force's "tolerence" may be 10% plus 2mph. In that case, on a 30mph road, a camera would not normally activate unless a car drove past at 35mph or higher.
Please can you disclose the current "tolerance" level used by your force's speed cameras?
The Met follows NPCC (National Police Chiefs’ Council) Guidelines of enforcement from 10 % + 2mph of the posted speed limit. The word “tolerance” is avoided and we report in terms of enforcement thresholds.
Q2 - If your force's "tolerance" level for speed cameras has ever changed since 1 November 2017, please can you provide a list of the dates for when each change to the level was made, and what it changed to and from?
Prior to May 2019 the enforcement threshold was 10% + 3 mph of the posted speed limit.
Q3 - For every month since November 2017, please can you disclose the number of warnings of prosecution sent to motorists for speeding?
Please find attached information pursuant to your Question 3 above. The data presented is the monthly breakdown of the total number of speeding Notice of Intended Prosecutions (NIP’s) and Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) for the date range – November 2017 to October 2022.
Please note that in line with our joint ambitions under the Vision Zero action plan, the Met and TfL continue to work together in tackling the speeding problem in London and reducing harm on our roads. The increases in our safety camera enforcement activity is a critical part in delivering safe speeds in London and eliminating road deaths and serious injuries on the transport network by 2041.
