What’s the big difference between an average call handling environment and our Police command and control centres? It’s the huge importance of what you do there. To put it another way – while a call centre worker might save people money on their bills, your work with us will save lives.

At the heart of the action

As a communications officer with the Met, you’re the vital first point of contact for members of the public requesting police support. Answering both emergency 999 high priority and non-emergency calls, you’ll obtain and record essential information, assessing the level of police response required and initiating the appropriate action fast.

It’s a long way from the usual nine to five. Every day can be completely different. You’ll deal with a wide range of callers, some of whom may be frightened, angry or distressed. So it’s important that you’re calm, compassionate and a good listener, while remaining totally professional at all times.

If your application to join us is successful, you’ll be asked to attend one of our assessment days where you'll have an interview and we’ll assess your ability to handle these types of calls whilst obtaining the information our police officers need.

What other qualities are needed?

Good written and verbal communication skills, a talent for customer service and the ability to type accurately are all essential requirements, together with the capacity to work shifts.

You should also be a British citizen, a Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the Irish Republic. You mustn’t have any restrictions on employment or a time limit on your permitted stay in the UK and should have lived in the UK or EEA for the past three years.

Training

All communication officers receive just over five weeks of full-time training at the Hendon centre. This is followed by just over five weeks of one-to-one workplace coaching, which may be at one of the three centres based in Lambeth, Bow or Hendon. You must pass this training and reach the required operational performance at the end of your workplace coaching to continue in your role. You will receive additional training to enhance your skills as you gain experience.

Pay and allowances

On appointment of your standard contract, you will receive a starting salary of £22,242 gross per annum. In addition you will receive a London Location Allowance of £3,216 (Zone 1 Bow and Lambeth Central Communication Command) or Zone 2 (Hendon Central Communication Command) £1,617.

In addition, you will receive a 10% flexibility allowance and upon completion of training a 20% shift allowance.

Annual incremental spine points will achieve progression from minimum to maximum of the pay scale currently £24,740.

Location

There are currently Police Command and Control centres in Lambeth, Bow and Hendon. Please note that your preference of centre will be considered, however the final decision on the actual location of posting, will be dependent on the current business requirement.

Hours of work

To ensure that we continue to provide a service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all communications officers are required to work shifts, including weekends and nights. Shifts can vary from 8 to 12 hours in length. You may be placed on a shift pattern, depending on the needs of the business at the time you are posted.
