Vehicle Recovery Examination Services (VRES) is a key part of the Met’s drive to tackle vehicle crime on the streets of London. It works in partnership with a number of external agencies and Met contractors to remove, recover, restore and dispose of vehicles that are:
involved in collisions
involved in serious and organised crime and require forensic examinations
seized under police powers for having no insurance or being unlicensed
We support frontline policing and operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. We have our own unique in house policing team and a command and control team. We operate out of two forensic car pounds, Perivale and Charlton. Processing over 36,000 vehicles, we deal with everything, from two wheel bikes all the way up to and including HGVs. Our work has a direct impact upon the service the Met delivers Londoners and it is vital we are able to continue to deliver this service to meet current and future demands.
Right now, it is a particularly exciting time to join the team. We are currently undergoing a full business review aimed at identifying smarter ways of working and potential new growth opportunities both internal and externally.
The role will involve working Monday to Friday with varying start finish times to meet operational demands.
You’ll be managing a team processing a wide range of vehicles that have been seized and recovered to our pounds. This will involve managing the team’s time, overseeing their performance and ensuring they have the support they need in dealing with the public. From checking vehicle identification and condition, to maintaining their forensic integrity, you’ll play a major role in our operation. Supervising the use of specialist moving equipment, you’ll also make sure that your team operate safely in a busy, 24 hour operation.
Roles will include:
undertaking weekly and monthly audits
compiling operational weekly and monthly reports
being responsible for staff training requirements
delivering staff briefings
management of supplies and equipment
overseeing compliance of policies and procedures
dealing with enquiries from internal and external partner and agencies
Who you'll be
You will need to be a confident communicator, with the ability to motivate your team, as well as deal with upset or angry members of the public. You’ll be working indoors and outdoors, handling a variety of equipment either on your own or as part of a team, so you’ll need to be fully fit and prepared to operate in all weathers. Naturally, you’ll need a full UK driving licence, and you’ll know your way around a PC using Word and Excel.
With the patience and character to calm people down and to handle situations where vehicles may have been involved in fatal accidents, you’ll need a keen eye for detail. Any experience of handling cash, dealing with the public or working with vehicles would be an advantage.
This is a role where no two days are the same and there are plenty of opportunities to train in new skills, you’ll also enjoy Officer Safety Training and on-going learning to keep up with changes processes.
