The Directorate of Media and Communications (DMC) is the Met's inhouse communication function and is arguably one of the busiest and exciting communication teams in London.
The department operates around the clock to deliver impactful communications that help to keep people safe, keep over 40,000 police officers and staff informed, and deliver the Met’s vision to make London the safest global city.
We are looking for a brilliant internal communications managing editor - Channels to join our internal team and help deliver the Met’s most important work to date. The Met and its people have an abundance of fascinating stories to tell and incredible content to showcase through our established internal channels.

Responsibilities
- To plan, manage, deliver, evaluate and continually improve the Met's internal communication channels, driving their use and ensuring they connect officers and staff quickly and easily with people, tools and information.
- Manage the day to day editorial of the Met’s channels including the effective engagement with both internal business partners and stakeholders. Platforms may include the intranet, for example, news applications, forums, blogs, Q and As, as well as others including comms delivered in shared workspaces and virtual meeting applications, digital screens, and events.
- Plan and execute an audit of internal communications channels and create a channel plan.
- Oversee development of a team of specialist content creators, enhancing skills and managing demand.
Key job targets
- Develop and deliver the Met’s internal communication channels and products.
- Manage the editorial calendar for all channels, including the intranet, liaising with colleagues as appropriate.
- Create and where appropriate moderate and close Met-wide forums, blogs, polls and workspaces.
- Manage intranet search functionality and performance.
- Be proactive in managing, developing a team driving, and developing high quality content and products for our channels, researching, writing, developing and managing approval as required.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with a range of stakeholders to support delivery of business outcomes, working collaboratively within own team and across the organisation.
- Be the main point of contact on internal communication channels and provide an effective service for taking and responding to related enquiries.
- Monitor own and colleagues’ work against plans and milestones and act promptly to ensure activity stays on track and successful outcomes are delivered.
- Quality assure the content for our digital platforms, and online communities ensuring it’s regularly reviewed as appropriate, reformatted or rewritten where it fails and if necessary removed.
- Manage the governance of standards and guidelines around digital platforms, ensuring effective processes for updating, editing and removing content.
- Understand and ensure company brand, digital and editorial standards, guidelines, and communication standards are adhered to.
- Manage the measurement and monitoring of channels, provide regular reports and use the analysis to drive continual improvement and development.
- Support the development, delivery and maintenance of guidance and training relating to internal digital platforms and content.
- Line manage a team of content creators and publishers, developing and supporting individuals as required.
Communications and working relationships
- Regular contact with content owners across the business, either via email, telephone or face-to-face, to discuss how best to develop, present and evaluate platforms and content.
- Working with internal partners to facilitate the effective distribution of internal communications products across the Met site.
- Answer queries and provide advice, coaching or training on the publishing processes or on writing standards.
- Contact via email with content owners and editors whose content does not meet the required standards, to request that they make changes to their content.
- Working with the team to manage digital internal communications mailboxes and subsequent requests for forums, Q and As, blogs and training.
Scope for impact
- You will need to manage a high number of competing priorities simultaneously. Failure to do this could affect the successful delivery of a business goal or change programme.
- Manage the delivery of digital communication necessary to deliver organisational objectives, major change and wider transformation.
- Be responsible for maintaining the standards for internal communication channels and content and ongoing quality assurance.
- Assist the senior communications manager - Channels with the development of the strategic direction of our digital platforms and channels, contributing to the Internal Communications strategy and delivery of the Met’s vision and strategy.
- Work with the intranet development team to make recommendations to enable decisions on changes to the content, structure, layout and design of digital platforms to improve the user experience.
- You may need to remove content, even where driven by a senior leader, where the quality is below standard.
Line management
- You will directly line manage up to four members of staff.
