Salary: £47,046 to £51,573 plus a location allowance of £2,623. If you are new to the MPS you will receive £47,046 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £51,573 will be via incremental progression.

The Digital forensics lab manager is responsible for the day-to-day management for the central digital devices laboratory. Closely working with the Senior technical manager (Band L), Digital forensics manager (Band C) and Digital forensic assistant (Band E) in the central laboratory.


The role holders’ core tasks will be to manage resources and staffing, monitor performance, drive efficiency, motivate and manage professional development of staff. They will write laboratory policy documents and procedures for incorporation into the quality management system.

They will work to ensure ISO 17025 process and procedures are implemented and adhered to. The role holder will also undertake analysis of management information and the reports they generate from this will be presented at director level and impact on future laboratory focus and investment decisions.

The role holder will have direct line management responsibility of the Band N Digital forensic specialists and will work closely with the Senior digital forensic specialist (Band M) to develop the Band Ns and develop good practice in the lab.

Key activities

  • Management, leadership and development of the DCC team to ensure effective use of resources
  • Technical management of incoming work to the DCC central lab, ensuring they are proportionate liaising directly with police or the criminal justice system and negotiating the work required to meet deadlines and provide best evidence
  • Liaising with officers, senior digital forensic specialist and external suppliers to develop forensic strategies
  • Develop and manage the digital devices lab ensuring that the lab is effective and efficient
  • Provide strategic leadership to teams in partnership with Digital forensic technical manager
  • Continual performance measurement and assessment of staff to ensure competence and that the output of the DCC lab meets quality standards
  • Line management responsibilities for band Ns at the lab

  • Manage procurement of laboratory equipment
  • Managing the development and implementation of techniques to improve the Laboratory’s range of services, quality and efficiency to meet the strategic direction of DCC
  • Work in partnership with Directorate of Forensic Services and DEFS managers to develop and deliver change
  • Write policy documentation and procedures to be incorporated into quality management system
  • Work within the Directorate’s Quality Management System and actively participate in the continuous improvement of the system by engaging in audits, competence tests, reporting non-conformances, etc and suggesting changes to improve the system
  • Work on-call and/or work outside of normal office hours as investigations require
  • Manage smooth interaction between labs, especially during inter-lab investigations, ensuring best evidence
  • Work with recruitment including writing adverts, sifting and interviews
  • Attend internal and external meetings as DCC and/ or MPS representative
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with other Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA’s), external providers and industry experts to promote best practice and increase organisational skills and knowledge
  • Ensure compliance with those statutory instruments that affect evidential processing and presentation of digital evidence e.g. RIPA, PACE, Human Rights Act
