Junior Citizen / Street Vibe
CRIME, CONSEQUENCES, CHOICE AND PERSONAL SAFETY The choices young people make will determine the life they lead
Thank you for expressing your interest in our community safety initiatives. This year the business community will be invited to support two unique child safety initiatives that aim to promote safety in the community and to educate young people on how to respect themselves, their peers and the community at large. To support our ‘Junior Citizen’ and ‘Street-Vibe’ programmes we have engaged the services of The Children’s Safety Education Foundation to assist in the design, development and distribution of bespoke educational literature that we aim to distribute to every young person aged between 7 and 14 years in London.
Junior Citizen
This year more than 40,000 Year 6 children attending Primary schools throughout London will participate in a unique learning experience called ‘Junior Citizen’. Co-ordinated by my colleagues at the Metropolitan Police Service the events are supported by a large and diverse selection of agencies including the British Transport Police, London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service, British Red Cross, Local Borough Councils, London Transport, London Underground, Network Rail, Trading Standards, Port of London Authority, Seeboard, Healthy Schools, Park Rangers and Education Welfare.
Each child attending the event will be taken through a number of practical exercises (scenarios) that highlight hazardous situations that the student may encounter in their everyday lives. Experts will deliver a number of safety messages in a fun and entertaining way to ensure maximum impact and retention. Topics covered include Road Safety, Safety in the home, Fire Safety, Water Safety, Rail Safety, Personal Safety, Drugs, Alcohol, Smoking, First Aid, Hate Crime, Electricity Safety and Gas Safety. Junior Citizen is a unique event that provides an opportunity to promote multi-agency working in the field of child safety education. The ‘Junior Citizen Handbook’ reinforces the safety messages taught at the event and has been curriculum coded to Key Stage 2 (7 – 11 years) so it can be used within a classroom environment or at home with a trusted adult.
Street Vibe
For those young people that have progressed to secondary schools we have developed a resource dealing with the harsher aspects of society today. Curriculum coded and developed over many years with experts from the field of education and child protection.
The topics covered include:
- Staying Safe and in Control
- Drug and Solvent Misuse
- Car Crime
- Shop Lifting
- Racial Harassment
- Bullying
- Anti-Social Behaviour
- Trespass and Vandalism
There are more than 240,000 young people aged between 11 and 14 years attending Secondary schools across London. To support the good work being carried out by my colleagues in the field we aim to distribute copies of ‘Street Vibe’ to every child. For those of you continuing to help us educate local children on important safety matters – thank you. If this is your first opportunity to become involved your support will be invaluable. Young people are a valued part of our community and with your support we aim to make them feel safe, involved and reassured. A member of the team at the Children’s Safety Education Foundation will contact you in relation to these initiatives and I hope that following due consideration, you will be able to support our work with young people.
