MetPoliceUK - Twitter Policy

Please do not try to report crime using Twitter

The MetPoliceUK Twitter account has been set up to inform the public of Metropolitan Police related news, events, online facilities and major incidents.

We will use some automation (such as tools which generate tweets from RSS feeds) but intend that these will not be the only the messages posted.

If you follow us, you can expect tweets covering some or all of the following:

  • Operational updates about the policing of events.
  • News about how the MPS is policing London, major criminal investigations and prosecutions.
  • Appeals for information and assistance from the public.
  • Crime prevention advice or local community information relevant to participants of events.
  • Occasional advice about protecting yourself from crime.
  • News about online facilities from the MPS website and other policing related sources.
  • Comment on media stories relating to the MPS.
  • Information from emergency services partners relevant to the safety and well being of Londoners and visitors to the capital.

Following

If you follow us on Twitter we will not automatically follow you back. This is to discourage the use of direct messaging and so that you can easily identify other key Twitter users we think are relevant to our work and who we will follow. Being followed by us does not imply endorsement of any kind.

@Replies and Contacting the MPS

We are unable to monitor Twitter round the clock.
If you wish to contact the MPS please visit your local police station or use one of the methods detailed in the contact us section of this website.

Please do not try to report crime using Twitter.
To report crime, please call 101. In an emergency, always call 999. Some types of crime can be reported on our website: https://online.met.police.uk/

This allows us to ensure your inquiry is directed to the appropriate person or department, dealt as quickly as possible and using the appropriate levels of confidentiality and record keeping.

We welcome feedback and ideas from all our followers and although we are not able to reply individually to the messages and comments we receive via Twitter we will try to read @replies.

We cannot guarantee that we will be able to read everything marked for our attention but we will try to ensure that any emerging themes or helpful suggestions are passed to the relevant people and responded to where possible.

You are also reminded that malicious communications using Twitter may constitute a criminal offence and will be dealt with appropriately.
