Safer Transport Command
Project Spiderweb
On 1 July British Transport Police, MPS Safer Transport Command and Transport for London formed a collaborative theft reduction team called Project Spiderweb to further reduce theft across all modes of public transport in London in preparation for a safe and secure 2012 games.
This initiative which lasts for 12 months takes an innovative approach to a wide range of crime reduction techniques to keep passengers safe and secure.
Theft
Recorded crime on London’s public transport is at its lowest level ever with only 11 crimes per million passenger journeys however it is the crime that passengers are most likely to experience.
Crime prevention
To prevent yourself becoming a victim of theft do not advertise your valuables, keep them secure and safe at all times
Top tips for keeping your valuables safe from pickpockets are:
- Keep your valuables out of sight
- Keep your bag zipped up
- Wear your bag on your front
- Keep your phone and wallet in an inside pocket of your jacket or deep inside your bag
Reporting
MPS and BTP police officers will robustly investigate all reports of theft.
If you have been a victim of theft report it to a police officer or a member of transport staff immediately.
If you believe your property has been lost report it as a lost item immediately to a member of transport staff who will put you in touch with Lost Property.
In an emergency call 999.
Fraudulent reporting
Police would like to remind people that falsely reporting a theft is an offence.
Give them an inch campaign
The Give them an inch campaign which you may have seen already at transport hubs reminds passengers to be wary of pickpockets on and around public transport. It is a joint effort between Transport for London and its policing partners - the British Transport police, Metropolitan Police's Safer Transport Command and the City Of London Police.
