Reasons for using BWV

The Metropolitan Police Service is clear in its ambition to become a world leading digital police force to enable frontline police officers to be more effective as well as strengthening the police/public partnership.

We are using Body Worn Video for a number of reasons including:

  • Largest global use of Body Worn Video within a police force; modernising the Metropolitan Police Service through technology.
  • Increasing the use of technology within the criminal justice for more efficient and effective justice for victims.
  • Greater transparency of policing; improving the investigation of complaints.
  • Making stop and search more accountable to communities.
  • Video captures events in a way that cannot be represented on paper.
  • Offenders are more likely to plead guilty, if they know they have been recorded; potentially speeding up the criminal justice process.
  • BWV will be incident specific and will not be used to indiscriminately record Londoners.
