The Metropolitan Police Service is committed to working with you for a safer London. In order to gain your views we consult with you in various ways. One of these ways is through the use of our Public Attitude Survey. The purpose of carrying out local surveys is to understand how the Metropolitan Police Service can police London more effectively and work with partners to deliver a safer environment for all Londoners. Surveying provides a consistent and reliable way of collecting this information.

The Public Attitude Survey allows us to explore the way in which Londoners' experience crime and anti-social behaviour and covers a number of topics including:

  • The local area and community
  • Confidence and satisfaction with policing
  • Perceptions of anti-social behaviour
  • Attitudes to policing
  • Contact with police
  • Communication with police

The Public Attitude Survey has been running in various forms since 1983, however, in it’s most recent form since 2005/06, we interview 12,800 Londoners each year and use this information to direct operational activity.

The Public Attitude Survey also helps us to do a better job as research has shown that people who have a high level of confidence in the police are more likely to:
  • Report victimisation
  • Come forward with information to assist cases
  • Cooperate with the police
  • Follow instructions of officers
  • Obey the law
