Deputy Commissioner Craig Mackey QPM

Deputy Commissioner Craig Mackey Craig Mackey joined the Police Service in 1984 having previously been in the Merchant Navy working for BP. His initial police service was spent in Wiltshire where he held a variety of operational roles and commands before, in 1991, being selected for the Accelerated Promotion Course.

In 1999 he was selected as a specialist staff officer for her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary, based at the Home Office, completing specialist inspections and thematic inspections. He attended the Strategic Command Course in 2001, spending time working with the Chicago Police looking at their approach to the review of murder enquiries.

In November 2001, he joined Gloucestershire Constabulary as Assistant Chief Constable. In an operational capacity, he was the Gold Commander for the terrorism operation in Gloucester that resulted in the arrest of the second shoe bomber. In 2005 he was appointed as Deputy Chief Constable. He has a strong background in partnership working having been heavily involved in the development of two joint, Fire, Police and Ambulance, emergency services control rooms in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

In September 2007 he was appointed as Chief Constable of Cumbria Constabulary. Since joining Cumbria Constabulary he has lead the development of Neighbourhood policing and Protective Services capability in the County. He was the Gold Commander for the 2009 Flooding and led the Force during one of its most demanding years which culminated in the tragic shootings of June 2010. He has established a strong working relationship with partners in the county, and through the Chief Executives Group and the Local Criminal justice Board is a strong advocate for achieving working solutions for the challenges facing Cumbria.

For the Association of Police Officers (ACPO) he sits on the Race & Diversity Business Area and leads for the service on Stop & Search and the monitoring of police powers.

He was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in the New Year’s Honours of 2009. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.

He is married with one child and enjoys mountain biking, reading and is a keen Rugby fan.

On 23rd January 2012 Craig Mackey became the Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service.
